First ever up-cycled hand knit Shetland Fine Lace wool & embossed sideboard art-piece heirloom.
I made this for my first ever-open studio for wool week 2016.
I had already done two up-cycled embossed furniture heirlooms but I couldn’t emboss the wicker so what was I to do, make Shetland fine lace panels of course! What could be more exquisite!
First sand down ready for primer, pull off old leather strap handles. Sanded the top down to the bare wood and white waxed it for a modern Scandi finish. 2 coats of primer, just put it on with a brush.
Covered and masked the top with newspaper then spray-painted the drawers and sideboard with 2 coats of Antique matt paint on a beautiful calm summers day.
First hand knit Shetland fine lace in un-dyed Shetland Supreme 2 ply lace wool panel in place. Put it on damp after hand wash for perfect fit, fits like a glove! Relief. (This took a lot of working out before I started knitting!)
I finished all my panels (3 months knitting around the nights) and put them on before I did the embossing. You need to see what is going to pull the design together by drawing different designs taken for the stitches that work just right to make the piece to gel as a whole.
Embossed (own technique) the side panel first after drawing on the design with a light pencil. Very happy with the look and finished the embossing in 3 days. Put on new antique style knobs that worked, voila!

First two commissions for up-cycle art-piece already – yippee…so excited!
